Welcome to the South East Wales Safeguarding Children Board (SEWSCB) website.
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children requires effective coordination in every local area. For this reason, the Children Act 2004 required each Local Authority to establish a Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB).
LSCBs are the key statutory mechanism for agreeing how the relevant organisations in each local area will cooperate to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, and for ensuring the effectiveness of what they do.
From April 1st, 2013, the South East Wales Safeguarding Children Board (SEWSCB) has replaced the five former Local Safeguarding Children Boards in Newport, Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly.
The SEWSCB has the lead strategic role in ensuring that children and young people in the South East Wales region are protected from abuse, neglect and exploitation and discrimination and live in an environment that promotes their well-being and life chances.
The SEWSCB will work actively against all forms of discrimination towards and by children and young people, regardless of their individual background and circumstances. Our equalities commitment covers ethnic origin, sex, age, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, gender reassignment, religious beliefs or non-belief, use of Welsh language, BSL and other languages, nationality, responsiblity for any dependents or any other reason which cannot be shown to be justified.
The SEWSCB is a multi agency partnership comprising of representatives from Gwent Police, Social Services and Education Directorates from the five Local Authority areas, the Voluntary Sector, Youth Offending Services, the All Wales Probation Trust, CAFCASS Cymru, Housing, Public Health Wales and Aneurin Bevan Health Board. The purpose of this partnership working is to hold each other to account and to ensure safeguarding children remains high on the agenda across the region.
This website is currently being developed to reflect the activity of the South East Wales Safeguarding Children Board. It is hoped that the website will used by parents and carers, children and young people, professionals, community groups and voluntary agencies, to access information about keeping our children and young people safe.
The website will provide information about the structure, aims and work of the SEWSCB. The site will also contain useful links to other websites that also contain information about safeguarding children and young people. The website will be updated regularly with information about guidance, protocols, procedures, events and news in relation to safeguarding in South East Wales.
